AI Coding Assistants and Developer Tools

Developer tooling has moved through three generations, and all three are represented here. Inline completion predicts the next lines as you type. Chat assistants answer questions about a file or a repository. Agentic tools plan and apply changes across many files, run commands and iterate on the result. Around them sit code review assistants, test and documentation generators, and tools aimed at migrations and legacy modernisation.

The main technical differentiator is context: how much of your codebase the tool can actually see and how it decides what to look at. A tool that reads only the open file gives generic answers in a large project, which is why repository indexing and retrieval quality matter more than the underlying model on most days.

For anything used at work, check the data terms early: whether code is retained, whether it can be used for training, and whether self-hosted or zero-retention options exist. Then agree on review expectations. Generated code that nobody reads carefully has a way of becoming the least understood part of a codebase.
