Aider

Aider lets you pair program with LLMs to start a new project or build on your existing codebase

Aider is an open-source tool for pair programming with large language models in your terminal. It can start a new project or work on an existing codebase, editing multiple files and committing each change to git with a sensible commit message so you can diff, manage, or undo the AI's work with familiar tools.

It works best with models such as Claude 3.7 Sonnet, DeepSeek R1 and V3, OpenAI o1, o3-mini, and GPT-4o, though it can connect to nearly any LLM, including local ones. Aider builds a map of your whole codebase to work well in larger projects, supports more than a hundred programming languages, and can run from inside your IDE by picking up comments you add to code. You can add images and web pages to the chat for context, describe changes by voice, and have it lint and test after every edit and fix what it finds. The site reports millions of installs and tens of thousands of GitHub stars, which places it firmly in the coding and development category.

Aider is free and open source. Install it, open a terminal in your repository, and ask for your first change.
